Restorative Music Circles
Music not only encourages expression, but teaches us how to listen. In listening, we can use music to understand how it is directly related to communication. As a circle facilitator, I center group process using activities of various methods, both traditional and nontraditional. My circle practices create a playful and holistic musical environment via exploring sound, music, expression, feelings and interrelationships.
My back round, both in music and social work allow me to facilitate restorative and transformative circles. My intent is to open the clients perspective to the importance of, and relationships between, music, art, social justice and other and humanitarian disciplines. I hope to awaken an appreciation for all musical expressions of beauty while exploring diverse styles and forms and cultural identities that help create dialogue and understanding within the context of social work.
My current education at Kennedy King College working towards a Racial Healing Practitioner Certification, as well as a Fellow at Disability Lead Institute, allows me to include diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and advocacy work, both in group circles, on the stage, and in the classroom.
I look to collaborate with institutions or cultural education programs which uphold a commitment to likeminded visions with community, music, art healing and service. I hope to be a part of meaningful, connective music discussions and the process within this music and social work. I also hope to focus on advocacy, making resources specifically within music and education accessible to our inner city communities.
We need to consider all diverse aspects of social realities and how they interact to make a distinct point specifically in addressing what disability and other institutionalized hardships looks like for many BIPOC at the socioeconomic and community level. They make a huge impact on the opportunities and fundamental happiness and welfare of our communities. As a disabled, non-binary Latina, I too am compelled by my own narrative.
